Marcel has a Tonmeister degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Music in The Netherlands in Art of Sound and a Master degree in Music Education. Marcel specialised in music recording, live theatre sound and sound design for theatre. During his studies he took advanced courses in trumpet, piano, singing, music theory, arranging, conducting, acoustics, psychology, electronics and producing.
During 20-year tenure at Stage Entertainment Marcel mixed more than 5,000 shows over the last 20 years, enjoyed by an audience of over 8 million, working closely with internationally renowned creative teams, designers (e.g., Steve Canyon Kennedy, John Shivers, Paul Groothuis, Jeroen ten Brinke, Paul Arditti and Gareth Owen), composers (e.g., Daniel Jobim, Phil Collins, Paul Bogaev, Stephen Brooker, Jim Abbott, Jeroen Sleyfer), soloists (e.g., Vanessa da Mata, Zizi Strallen, Matt Lee, Simone Kleinsma, Pia Douwes, Willem Nijholt, Chantal Janzen, Bill van Dijk, Marco Bakker), ensembles, orchestras (e.g., The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra) and many musicians.
He was Head of Sound for productions in The Circustheater in The Netherlands. In this position Marcel and his team were responsible for the sound of Miss Saigon, Elisabeth, Aida, Musicals in Concert, Lion King, Mary Poppins, Beauty and The Beast, Tarzan and Ciske de Rat. Marcel was sound operator for The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misèrables, Wicked, Sister Act and Billy Elliot.
In 2014 Marcel joined sound designer Paul Groothuis for the Disney/CML’s Mary Poppins for productions in Vienna | The Ronacher (2014), Stuttgart | Stage Apollo Theatre (2016), the UK tour | Alhambra Theatre Bradford | WMC Cardiff (2016), Zurich | Theater 11 (2017) and Dubai | Opera (2017) and Theater an der Elbe | Hamburg (2018).
In April-July 2017 Marcel was consultant for the sound design of A New Brain by William Finn & James Lapin produced by De Kernploeg in Amsterdam.
In his work, Marcel forms an important bridge between the artistic vision of the show designers, the language of musicians and soloists, the technical team and the audience.
Alongside musical theatre, Marcel works as Sound Design Consultant for The Space Factory in Lyon, France. Also as recording and balance engineer on a variety of educational and commercial productions.
Marcel is lecturer at The Creative College Utrecht and teaches Physics at The Maris College The Hague.
Marcel is member of the Association of Sound Designers (ASD).
